Other poker bets II

A game of poker can be played with a variety of bet types, among which the straddle and the sleeper bets need special mention. A straddle bet can either be a live or a Mississippi straddle. Interesting similarity between a straddle and a sleeper bet is that both of them can be considered as a raise, sometimes as a separate raise not included in the maximum number of raises allowed in that game and sometimes as one of the raises that are permitted.

The concept of a Mississippi and a live straddle blind bet is the same with the only difference being that while in the latter only the player on left of the big blind can pay it, in the former case, anyone of the players in the table can pay it. However, who ends up paying the Mississippi straddle is determined according to the casino house regulations and can vary from one to another. The player who pays the Mississippi straddle has to pay equal to the value of a minimum raise at least and the game action starts from left of him. Like live straddle, here also the player who pays the Mississippi bet can raise if none of his opponents has raised and the betting action has returned to him. However, the player who sits right to the Mississippi straddle player can re-straddle by raising the straddle value by wagering a blind.

According to some definition this bet can also be called a sleeper bet as the concept only means making a blind raise by any player other than him sitting left of the big blind. The only difference is while a Mississippi can be disallowed, a sleeper wager is permitted from any position. Also, he who pays a sleeper not only has no right of last action but also cannot raise. Interestingly, such bets are sometimes prohibited and disallowed on the plea they are out of turn action although they have the advantage of speeding up the game action and can act as a strategy to induce weak hands to fold before they have a chance to improve.
