Being a community card game, Texas Hold’em gets to see the cards are being dealt face-up in the middle of the table and allocated equally to all the players. Each player gets to have two down cards of theirs alone with the five community cards to further join them to come up with the best possible five-card hand. Texas Hold’em game kicks-off by serving two cards face down to each player, called as “hole cards” or “pocket cards”. A round of betting just follows after it. A good number of hold’em games see the start of the betting by way of one or two “blind bets” to the left of the dealer.

Such bets are labeled as forced bets, require to be made before seeing one’s cards. Play moves on in a clockwise pattern from the blinds, offering each player prospect to fold, call the blind bet, or raise. Typically the blinds are kept live; it denotes there ability to raise themselves as soon as the action comes back around to them. Further three cards get thrown out face up in the middle of the table; known as the “flop”. A round of betting gets underway with action shifting focus on the first blind, right away to the dealers left.

Hope to see another card being dealt face up after another round of betting, paving way for the final card to be dealt after the final round of betting. The game typically gets played for high only where players vie to form the best five-card combination to struggle for the pot. Players by and large make use of both their hole cards to put up their best hand; however this is not called for. A player may possibly even wish to “play the board” without getting to make use of hole cards at all.

A game of poker can be played with a variety of bet types, among which the straddle and the sleeper bets need special mention. A straddle bet can either be a live or a Mississippi straddle. Interesting similarity between a straddle and a sleeper bet is that both of them can be considered as a raise, sometimes as a separate raise not included in the maximum number of raises allowed in that game and sometimes as one of the raises that are permitted.

The concept of a Mississippi and a live straddle blind bet is the same with the only difference being that while in the latter only the player on left of the big blind can pay it, in the former case, anyone of the players in the table can pay it. However, who ends up paying the Mississippi straddle is determined according to the casino house regulations and can vary from one to another. The player who pays the Mississippi straddle has to pay equal to the value of a minimum raise at least and the game action starts from left of him. Like live straddle, here also the player who pays the Mississippi bet can raise if none of his opponents has raised and the betting action has returned to him. However, the player who sits right to the Mississippi straddle player can re-straddle by raising the straddle value by wagering a blind.

According to some definition this bet can also be called a sleeper bet as the concept only means making a blind raise by any player other than him sitting left of the big blind. The only difference is while a Mississippi can be disallowed, a sleeper wager is permitted from any position. Also, he who pays a sleeper not only has no right of last action but also cannot raise. Interestingly, such bets are sometimes prohibited and disallowed on the plea they are out of turn action although they have the advantage of speeding up the game action and can act as a strategy to induce weak hands to fold before they have a chance to improve.

Poker is a very popular game and has many variations of play and therefore there are many kinds of betting that are part of it. One such type of bet that is a part of some poker games is the straddle bet. A straddle bet is not forced, but rather optional. It is similar in its concept to a blind bet and is paid by a player after small and big blinds have been placed in the pot but the cards have not yet been dealt to the players. Only poker games paid for cash and which has a betting structure of fixed blind wager allows a straddle bet. However, tournament poker games are not paid with straddle bet.

The sole purpose of a straddle bet is to allow the player who pays it the right of last action, an advantage that is normally assigned to the player who pays the big blind in games played only with blinds but no straddle wager. In the casinos of Las Vegas, straddle bet is permitted but it is considered illegal and not allowed in Atlantic City casinos.

An important kind of straddle bet is the live straddle blind bet and I normally paid by the player who is the left-hand side neighbor to the player who has paid the big blind. The amount of this type of a straddle bet is the same as the value of a normal raise that follows a big blind in a game table. Since it is a live bet, the player who pays it is considered to be a person who has wagered a ‘bigger blind’. The game continues with the player sitting left and next to the one who paid the straddle, who has the privilege to raise the bet if no one else has raised it while it went round. In some cases the player on left of the one who paid the live straddle bet can chose to re-straddle, a condition of the game where he wagers a blind and thus raise the value of the straddle.

Casinos offer big bets in Texas hold ‘em, Omaha hold ‘em and 7-card stud poker. For example, in a $5/$10 Texas hold ‘em gambling game, the big bet is $10 and applicable for the final two betting rounds where the small bet of $5 is to be wagered on the opening and other rounds. Big bet for Texas hold ‘em in the casino can range between as low as 4 cents and as high as $8,000. The highest big bet limit is found in a Las Vegas casino where professional gamblers playing for high stakes assemble and each of them is required to place the big bet in both the final two rounds.

In a casino gambling game of Omaha hold ‘em, big bet is used so that players can get buy-in whenever they want. Since in a game of Omaha Eight-or-Better, each player has highly favorable odds of winning, there is lesser tendency among players even with inferior hands to fold and they persist in playing. In these cases, casinos don’t allow big bets and instead pot limit style games are offered to the players.

The application of the big bet concept finds full use in casino gambling games like the 7-card stud poker. Here the big bet is introduced in the game once the final face up card has been dealt and most players with inferior hands decide to quit at this stage and fold even though they stand to lose all the money they have contributed in the pot already during the ante wager and three betting rounds. Only players committed to stay till showdown remain in the game in the final two betting rounds. Big bets are effective in eliminating weaker hands who would otherwise stick to playing, being reluctant to give up the lucrative pot. In the 7-card stud poker game big bet in the final two rounds of play makes the game based on player skill and shuts out possibility of dumb luck.

Big bet is a concept that is applicable in those poker games that are played with fixed limit. So, when there are two fixed bet amounts the larger is the big bet and is generally used in the final betting round of the game with the sole purpose of increasing the value of the pot. Big bets, which are normally double the amount wagered as the small bet or the opening bet, often invites bluff playing from the players. A common feature in most multi-round games of fixed limit poker, big bets are used by casino houses so that even when a gambler loses, the dough he has to part with is at a set limit. The advantage of big bets in a poker game is that since they help in raising the pot size, players tend to accept the risk factor and continue playing till the final round of the game and showdown.

It has been found that while any poker games involving several playing rounds sue the big bet concept, it is mostly used in casinos where gamblers have the option to play with unlimited buy-in. So, casinos publicize the fact that big bet has a maximum wager limit that is relatively low and pocket-friendly and any player can join in play at any stage.

In a casino game of draw poker, big bet is effectively used to eliminate weak players. This is because only those who are playing for high stakes and after knowing all their cards, still are committed to play, only they will be motivated to double their wager and make a big bet. However, it has been found that big bet combined with half-pot limit or pot limit or spread limit generally dissuade indifferent players form continuing in draw poker games in the casinos and they fold. However, in no limit draw poker games, only when table limits are set, it can stop gamblers from joining in once it has started.
