Other poker bets I
September 19th, 2008Poker is a very popular game and has many variations of play and therefore there are many kinds of betting that are part of it. One such type of bet that is a part of some poker games is the straddle bet. A straddle bet is not forced, but rather optional. It is similar in its concept to a blind bet and is paid by a player after small and big blinds have been placed in the pot but the cards have not yet been dealt to the players. Only poker games paid for cash and which has a betting structure of fixed blind wager allows a straddle bet. However, tournament poker games are not paid with straddle bet.
The sole purpose of a straddle bet is to allow the player who pays it the right of last action, an advantage that is normally assigned to the player who pays the big blind in games played only with blinds but no straddle wager. In the casinos of Las Vegas, straddle bet is permitted but it is considered illegal and not allowed in Atlantic City casinos.
An important kind of straddle bet is the live straddle blind bet and I normally paid by the player who is the left-hand side neighbor to the player who has paid the big blind. The amount of this type of a straddle bet is the same as the value of a normal raise that follows a big blind in a game table. Since it is a live bet, the player who pays it is considered to be a person who has wagered a ‘bigger blind’. The game continues with the player sitting left and next to the one who paid the straddle, who has the privilege to raise the bet if no one else has raised it while it went round. In some cases the player on left of the one who paid the live straddle bet can chose to re-straddle, a condition of the game where he wagers a blind and thus raise the value of the straddle.
